Family time has always been important but making the time spent together valuable and full of substance may be a challenge in today?s technological age. Too often television, the Internet and other gadgets replace time that could easily be spent cultivating family relationships. It is quite common for parents and caregivers to become overwhelmed and consumed by the demands of our everyday lives and inadvertently neglect arranging true quality time with their children and significant others.
Scheduled and spontaneous quality family time is necessary to develop and foster meaningful relationships. This time should be spent doing a significant activity or simply getting to know one another: sharing thoughts, ideas and feelings.
The family setting is the first place where a child learns about unconditional love, responsibility, communication, self-worth, morals, trust, values and relationships. It is in this informal setting where a child is able to express themselves, learn their familial roles and begin to form their own personalities. Creating an atmosphere that fosters true valuable family time begins by altering a few small things in our everyday lives.
First, eating meals together as a family around the ?dinner table? sans the television is a step that promotes true communication for both the speaker and the listener. An act as simple as this can force a family to talk to each other and create great discussion. Another way to initiate quality time is through becoming active outdoors: walks in the park, trips to the playground or a simple family drive are other ways that families can begin to enjoy each other?s company.
An additional idea is a family board game day/night in which the family can engage in healthy competition and really enjoy spending time together. Board games seem to be a forgotten element in family entertainment; revisiting these pre-technological pastimes allows families to become intellectually and physically engaged with one another. Eventually quality family time will become second nature and anticipated.
