Government tax revenues on the rise | Finance content from ...

Increase in fourth quarter revenues a sign that recession?s effects may be easing

State and local government tax revenue in the final quarter of 2011 rose to a 23-year high, the Census Bureau reported March 22. Tax revenues were at the highest level for one quarter since the Census Bureau began tracking state and local tax data in 1988, according to Reuters.

?Tax revenues in the fourth quarter last year rose 2.1 percent from the fourth quarter of 2010, the ninth consecutive quarter of positive year-over-year growth, the Census Bureau said. State and local revenue for the quarter totaled $387.2 billion, compared to $379 billion for the fourth quarter of 2010.

Tax revenues were stronger throughout 2011, totaling a record $1.35 trillion, 4.5 percent higher than in 2010. That surpassed the $1.3 trillion in tax revenues in 2008, before the recession?s effects hit state and local governments hard in 2009, causing revenues to plummet to 20-year lows.

In the fourth quarter last year, tax revenues for state and local governments increased across the board, the Census Bureau said, with property taxes, general sales taxes and individual income taxes all recording positive growth. Property taxes grew 0.2 percent to $177.2 billion from $176.8 billion in the last quarter of 2010.

The increased tax revenues are among continuing signs of an improving economy. Unemployment rates have dropped in many states, and the U.S. economy created almost 2 million new jobs last year, according to a study by Arizona State University.

But state and local officials worry that any new downturn could threaten budgets already stretched thin by cuts made during the height of the financial crisis. Local governments are particularly vulnerable because they rely largely on property tax revenue, which is still affected by the collapse of the housing market.

World News - Iranian weapons help Bashar Assad put down Syria ...

Europe's attempts to punish Syria's brutal regime turned today to the British-born wife of President Assad. Asma al-Assad was banned from traveling to Europe and her financial assets were frozen. But the sanctions may be largely impotent, as a UK passport holder she can't be prevented from entering the UK. ITV's Paul Davies reports

By Reuters

WASHINGTON -- Iran is providing a broad array of assistance to Syrian President Bashar Assad to help him suppress anti-government protests, from high-tech surveillance technology to guns and ammunition, U.S. and European security officials say.

Tehran's technical assistance to Assad's security forces includes electronic surveillance systems, technology designed to disrupt efforts by protesters to communicate via social media, and Iranian-made drone aircraft for overhead surveillance, the officials said. They discussed intelligence matters on condition of anonymity.

"Over the past year, Iran has provided security assistance to Damascus to help shore up Assad. Tehran during the last couple of months has been aiding the Syrian regime with lethal assistance - including rifles, ammunition, and other military equipment -- to help it put down the opposition," a U.S. official said.

"Iran has provided Damascus (with) monitoring tools to help the regime suppress the opposition. It has also shared techniques on Internet surveillance and disruption," the official continued.

Syrians brave gunfire in anti-Assad protests

He added that Iran had also provided Assad's government with "unarmed drones that Damascus is using along with its own technology to monitor opposition forces."

Syria's rebel fighters are desperate for arms and ammunition. Members of the Free Syrian Army were forced from Idlib - one of the last rebel strongholds. ITN's John Irvine reports from outskirts of Idlib, the north western city which rebels surrendered last week.

Iranian security officials have also traveled to Damascus to advise Assad's entourage how to counter dissent, the official said. Some Iranian officials have stayed on in Syria to advise Assad's forces, he added.

Iran's multi-pronged security aid to Syria appears to have helped Assad's government in its increasingly violent campaign to hold on to power in the face of a year-long protest movement. The United Nations estimates 8,000 civilians have died in the conflict.

However, the U.S. and European officials said the Syrian government's survival is not totally dependent on continuing help from Tehran.

Assad's wife banned from traveling, shopping in EU

U.S. and allied official broadly agree that Assad's control remains solid. His opponents are hopelessly disorganized, the officials said, which may make it possible for the Syrian president and his entourage to hold onto power for years.

"At current levels Iranian aid is important but not really a game changer in the overall conflict," a U.S. official noted.

Paul Conroy, a photographer for the Sunday Times, was badly injured while on assignment in Syria and his colleague ? legendary war correspondent Marie Colvin was killed. Conroy joins NBC's Andrea Mitchell to reflect on the situation.

Iran has for decades been a patron to Syria, which has helped funnel aid and weapons to the Iranian-backed Shiite Muslim militia Hezbollah in Lebanon.

During the protests that followed Iran's disputed 2009 presidential election -- the biggest mass protests since the Islamic Republic's founding in 1979 -- Iranian authorities disrupted social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as cell phone networks.

Iran's internal crackdown reportedly has escalated since then.

Wounded Syrians recount horror of tank attacks

A European official said that the Iranians were providing Syrian security agencies with hardware and software that would help them disrupt efforts to organize protests inside Syria and efforts by anti-government elements to spread their message to supporters outside the country.

European suppliers
Officials said that Syria had also obtained some surveillance technology from European suppliers.

As protests against Assad's rule grew last year, the United States first raised the possibility that Iranian authorities were helping their Syrian counterparts suppress dissent.

Finally, UN reaches agreement over 'extremely dangerous crisis' in Syria

Last June the U.S. Treasury Department announced economic sanctions against two of Iran's most senior police officials for allegedly helping Assad's government crush protests.

The Treasury imposed U.S. economic sanctions on Ismail Ahmadi Moghadam and Ahmad-Reza Radan, chief and deputy chief of Iran's national police force, because their agency had "provided support to the Syrian General Intelligence Directorate and dispatched personnel to Damascus in April to assist the Syrian government in suppressing the Syrian people."

The Treasury alleged that Radan had traveled to Damascus to meet with Syrian security agencies, to whom he allegedly provided "expertise to aid in the Syrian government crackdown on the Syrian people."

Activist: Assad's crackdown turning peaceful Syrians into terrorists

U.S. officials said Iranian efforts to bolster Syria's surveillance capabilities have been supplemented by deliveries to Syria of Iranian-made unarmed surveillance drone aircraft.

Earlier this month a specialized website, The Aviationist, reported that a drone flying over the city of Homs, the site of recent violent clashes between government and opposition forces, had been identified as a "Pahpad" drone, which the website said meant "remotely piloted aircraft" in Farsi.

Saudi Arabia will deliver military equipment to Syrian rebels in an effort to stop the bloodshed. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

In February another specialized website, Open Source GEOINT, published freeze-frame images from what purported to be an amateur cameraman's video of a suspected drone flying over a Damascus suburb.

Iran vows to retaliate 'on the same level' to US or Israel attack

The website noted that some news reports had suggested that the United States was flying intelligence drones over Syria but that the drone in the pictures did not appear to be a U.S. model.

The website cited speculation that the drone might be of Iranian origin. Ynet News, an Israeli website, reported this month that Syria's defense industry produces drones that are technologically identical to Iranian-produced models and speculated that these domestically produced models were what Syrian security forces had deployed.

Report: 'I am the real dictator,' Bashar's wife says

However, a U.S. official said that some of Syria's drones had come directly from Iran.

Last weekend the Iranian news agency Fars announced that Iranian experts had produced what it called a "new type of drone" known as the Shaparak, or "Butterfly," which it said was "capable of carrying out military and border patrol missions."

Why You Need Plenty of Bird Toys for Your Parrot | Ideas 4 Pets

Bird toys are not just a bit of fun, but are vital to the health and wellbeing of your pet. Parrots, budgies and other kinds of pet bird need stimulation. No matter what size parrot cage you buy, it can be a pretty boring place to be if there is nothing to do in it. A bored parrot will quickly become distressed and may start to pluck his feathers or start screeching. Alternatively, he might become depressed and withdrawn. Giving him some toys to play with, however, will prevent all this as he will have things to do.

Variety is the spice of life, for birds as well as for humans. You should consider having around 10 to 15 different bird products in the cage at any one time. Birds are intelligent and like lots of different things to do to keep them stimulated. If you?re thinking that the cage you have is too small to house that many toys plus your pet parrot, then you can either browse our selection of cages for a larger one, or choose toys that will fit in different parts of the cage. You can clip different toys onto the bars at the back, side or top of the cage, as well as having others on its floor. You can even have some toys outside the cage that your parrot can reach out to grab at. Bird toys also provide exercise for your parrot, so should use different parts of his body, such as the feet and beak.

JPMorgan wins dismissal of Ponzi scheme accusations

(Reuters) - A federal appeals court dismissed a lawsuit seeking to hold JPMorgan Chase & Co responsible for services allegedly provided by the former Washington Mutual Inc to advance a Ponzi scheme at Caribbean-based Millennium Bank.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said on Tuesday that investors who bought fraudulent certificates of deposit from Millennium did not pursue all remedies with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as required by federal law or show that JPMorgan did anything to advance the alleged fraud.

The decision by a three-judge panel upheld an October 2010 lower court ruling. Niall McCarthy, a lawyer for the investors, was not immediately available for comment.

Washington Mutual was seized on September 25, 2008 by the FDIC, which immediately sold the largest U.S. savings and loan's banking operations to JPMorgan for $1.88 billion.

Last month, a San Francisco federal grand jury returned a 23-count indictment charging William Wise and Jacquline Hoegel with fraud and conspiracy over the sale of $129.5 million of CDs by their companies Millennium, United Trust of Switzerland and Sterling Bank and Trust, resulting in $75 million of losses.

Prosecutors alleged that Millennium, United Trust and Sterling had promised CD investors high rates of return, sometimes over 16 percent, based on overseas investments, but that Wise and Hoegel used investors' funds to enrich themselves and pay off earlier investors.

Their activities were shut down in March 2009 when the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed related civil fraud charges.

Wise, a Canadian lawyer, is believed to be in Canada and a warrant for his arrest has been issued, the U.S. Attorney's office in San Francisco said on Tuesday. Hoegel, a resident of American Canyon, California, was released on bond.

The CD investors sought to hold JPMorgan liable for Washington Mutual's having provided banking services to Millennium. These investors claimed that Washington Mutual knew about the fraud at Millennium, which was based in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, while it was providing these services.

But the appeals court said the investors did not fully present their claims to the FDIC before suing the purchaser, in this case, JPMorgan, of a failed bank.

It added that investors did not show a single specific wrongful act by JPMorgan, relying instead on assertions that the bank's general "practices" caused their losses.

"The plaintiffs' conclusory allegations regarding JPMorgan fall short," Judge Carlos Lucero wrote for the appeals court.

The case is Benson et al v. JPMorgan Chase Bank NA, 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Nos. 10-17402 and 10-17404.

World's first two-megajoule ultraviolet laser fired in California: no, you can't buy one

Image
The Wolverines may have concocted the "most intense" laser in the universe back in '08, but it's a group of grinners at the National Ignition Facility in Livermore, California that can now lay claim to firing the planet's first two-megajoule ultraviolet laser. Earlier this week, a 1.875-megajoule shot was fired into the target chamber, but it broke the two-dot-oh barrier after passing through the final focusing lens. Reportedly, this matters for more than just bragging rights, as scientists have long since sought to get past 'ignition' in order to "coax fusion energy from a tiny frozen fuel pellet." If we had to guess, we'd say both Nerf and Mattel are somehow trying to commercialize this thing prior to the holidays. (And yeah, we hope they're successful.)

Best Place For Car Repairs? - Tewksbury, MA Patch

Michele is 100% correct! EBN never steered us in the wrong direction either. The funny thing that happened to us is we had a car that was being serviced quite often, and Joe actually told us he didn't want to take our money anymore; we should buy another car. When we asked him what he thought was a good car and would have limited maintenance he advised either a Toyota or a Honda. We did purchase a Toyota and really haven't been into EBN very often anymore. We do try to give them our oil change business though. If you go to a dealer for regular maintenance, you can get the same service at EBN for a much more affordable price. Love you Joe & Paul!!

Bears' wounds heal as they sleep

Black bears have a surprising capacity to heal as they hibernate, say researchers in the US.

Medical researchers and zoologists worked together to find that the bears' wounds healed with almost no scarring, and were infection-free.

The scientists hope, eventually, to find out exactly how the bears' bodies heal while their body temperature, heart rate and metabolism are reduced.

This could aid studies of human wound-healing.

The findings, published in the journal Integrative Zoology, are of particular relevance to medical researchers hoping to improve slow-healing and infection-prone wounds in elderly, malnourished or diabetic patients.

This study was part of a project by scientsts from the universities of Minnesota, Wyoming and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, who have tracked 1,000 black bears, in order to monitor their health and behaviour, for 25 years.

Whilst tracking the bears - using radio collars - the researchers noticed some early evidence of their surprising healing abilities.

They wrote in their paper: "We identified a few animals each year with injuries resulting from gunshots or arrows from hunters; bite marks from other bears or predators...

"These wounds were considered to have been incurred some time before the bears denned, and were often infected or inflamed... in early winter.

"Yet typically, when we revisited bears in their dens a few months later, most wounds had completely resolved whether or not we [cleaned them], sutured the areas or administered antibiotics."

To test the bear's healing abilities experimentally, the team carefully tracked the healing of small cuts on the skin of 14 of their radio-collared bears in northern Minnesota.

Between November (when the bears first settled down in their dens) and March (about a month before they emerged) the wounds healed with "minimal evidence of scarring".

Added to this, there were no signs of infection, the layers of damaged skin regrew and many of the bears even grew hair from newly formed follicles at the site of their injuries.

One of the researchers, Prof David Garshelis from the University of Minnesota, told BBC Nature: "It seems so surprising to us that their wounds would heal so well and so completely when they're hibernating and their metabolism is slowed down.

But, he added, the animals had many other "remarkable adaptations to hibernation".

A big sleep

  • Black bears hibernate for five to seven months a year
  • During hibernation, they do not eat, drink, urinate, or defecate
  • The animals also suppress their metabolism to a quarter of its normal rate
  • The bears' heart rates are reduced from 55 beats per minute to as few as nine

"They sit in the den for six months and don't lose any appreciable muscle or bone mass, so I guess this healing is another adaptation," Prof Garshelis said.

During its winter hibernation, a black bear's core body temperature is reduced by as much as 7C and their heart rate lowers dramatically. In humans, a lowered body temperature, or conditions that hamper circulation can seriously complicate wound-healing.

For this reason, the team hope to find out the mechanism behind the bears' remarkable healing abilities.

He told BBC Nature: "We consider this to have implcations for medical research.

"If we can work out how the bears heal, we hope there'll be potential to translate this research to [studies of] human healing."

This could be especially important for the development of treatments for slow-healing skin wounds in malnourished, hypothermic, diabetic and elderly patients.

To buy specialty coffee the right way, you should know a few things about what actually qualifies as a cup of specialty coffee. Sounds simple right? Unfortunately there are a lot of coffees out there being passed off as specialty when in reality, they are nowhere close.

Real specialty coffee is truly miles above and beyond the majority of options currently available. In fact most people?s understanding of how specialty coffee should taste is even in need of some improvement. If you are not sure what you should be looking for, there is a good chance your next purchase may be gourmet coffee priced, without the specialty coffee flavor. There are a lot of factors that go into a proper specialty coffee roast. Here are three things to look for in your search for the perfect sprecialty brew.

Coffee Bean Origin Where the coffee beans are grown makes a MASSIVE difference in the flavor. The mineral content of the soil, the weather, events during the growing season, adjacent plants and wildlife and packaging all factor into the taste and specialty feel of the coffee. Much like fine wine?five fingers shoes?, a true specialty coffee will present its most noticeable characteristics based on the region in which the bean was grown. Indonesian coffees like Sumatra can have a full, earthy body. Whereas a central American coffee like Guatemala may present with a sharp and clean finish. Check out which regions produce the type of bean you like.

Coffee Bean Quality Obviously for someone looking to buy specialty coffee, the quality of the bean plays a major factor. Regardless of where the bean comes from, the discerning consumer needs to be sure the coffee beans are the select ones from the batch. Lower grade coffee beans, ones that clearly don?t qualify as specialty, are more prone to shriveled bean, small rocks and dirt, or even rat feces. You get what you pay for, regardless of what the label says. If you want to be sure to only select high grade beans for your specialty coffee, a good coffee roaster will is the best option. A good roaster will know how to select the best grade bean to ensure the specialty coffee he sells is consistently top shelf.

Coffee Roasting Technique Before you buy specialty coffee, make sure you know how the roaster cooks his beans. Most companies, in the interest of cost, roast in large, continuous batches. Sure this is faster, but it results in beans that are usually over or under roasted. In a continuous batch, the beans are added as others come out. This creates a faster roasting, but it results in the beans being burned or over roasted so that they get up to temperature faster. The other option is just as bad. In an effort to not burn the specialty coffee, the temperature is lowered?cheap five fingers shoes?, so the beans come out slightly green and under roasted. Neither option truly results in a batch of gourmet coffee. Be sure to only buy specialty coffee from roasters that roast in small batches?coach purses outlet?, and not continuous.

Two schools name new faculty chairs :: Creightonian

March 17th, 2012 ?|? Published in News

Two faculty members of Creighton University were recently named to fill chair vacancies at the annual convocation. Beverly Kracher, PH.D, professor of business ethics and society and executive director and president of the Omaha Alliance for Business Ethics was named the Robert B. Daugherty Endowed Chair in Business Ethics and Society. Terry W. Wilwerding, D.D.S., professor of prosthodontics was named the Dr. Oscar S. Belzer Endowed Chair in Dentistry.

As the first female endowed chair in the history of the College of Business, Kracher is an international expert and speaker on business ethics.

In addition to heading the Business Ethics Alliance, which is a partnership between Creighton?s College of Business, the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, the Better Business Bureau and the whole business community, Kracher just co-authored the ?Ethinary,? a simple ethics dictionary.

Kracher said she is proud to receive the honor.

?[I was] shocked, honored and happy,? Kracher said. ?And then it was let?s get back?to work.?

The Robert B. Daugherty Endowed Chair?in Business Ethics and Society was established in 1981 to further scholarship in the field of business ethics and serve as a resource for business leaders in the community.

Wilwerding served as chairman of the Department of fixed prosthodontics from 1992-2000.

He now supervises dental students who staff the One World evening clinic, is co-director of the Institute for Latin American Concern (ILAC) dental program and oversees the bachelor?s degree program in dental hygiene. He is the director of the?dental history course and the preclinical fixed prosthodontics curriculum.

Wilwerding said he didn?t expect the honor but was happy to receive it.

?It is a great honor to be recognized by your school and peers and I suppose it validates some of my projects,? Wilwerding said. ?So it is a nice feeling.?

The Dr. Oscar S. Belzer Endowed Chair in Dentistry was established by Jerome Belzer, M.D., in honor of his father, a 1928 graduate of the school of dentistry. The chair recognizes and honors outstanding faculty members.

Tablet Owners Are Hungry for Paid Content [STUDY]

Are you buying lots of cool new apps for your iPad? If so, you have proved a study about tablet owners right.

A Nielsen study shows individuals are loading up their Apple iPads, Amazon Kindle Fires, Android devices and other tablets with paid content.

[More from Mashable: The View From the iPad Line [PICS]]

These consumers devour professional, long-form content such as books, magazine features and movies.

Tablet owners are currently redefining the standard of media consumption -- to charge or not to charge.

[More from Mashable: First Impressions With the New iPad [LIVE]]

Selling subscription-based content to mobile users was once unthinkable, Jonathan Carson -- head of Nielsen's Digital Business -- told Mashable. TV overwhelmingly relies on ads and subscriptions, but the Internet has not because most content is free.

Charging credit cards for tablet media content is a global trend, the study says. People are downloading costly music, books, movies, magazines, TV shows, streaming radio, news and sports content, usually in that order. The only discrepancy is the purchase of news in different countries.

Voluntary participants for the study were tablet users in U.S., U.K., Italy and Germany. Americans are the most likely out of the countries studied to buy entertainment. Though Italians are more likely to buy news content than anyone.

Why? It's a mix of the availability of free news in the U.S. and the kinds of media available in these countries, Carson said. U.S. news companies were traditionally really hesitant to experiment with online and mobile subscriptions.

That is certainly shifting.

"This has really important lessons for content strategies and for business models for media companies," Carson said. "For media companies it's figuring out the balance between what's our subscription versus single-content transaction versus advertising supported model. It's just a very critical nuanced balance for them to make right now."

SEE ALSO: iPad Is Still the King of Tablets, But Kindle Fire and Others Are Catching Up [STUDY]

Carson suggests that media organizations start experimenting now as new devices roll out in the near future.

"There is very strong usage for Americans for news content on tablets," Carson said. "They enjoy consuming news content on their tablets, just that Americans news companies have not monetized it through paid subscriptions and paid transactions."

The trend of paid content is viewed as a turn of events at Nielsen. Nielsen is currently focused on looking at the world as people adapt to various smart devices. Things change every couple of months, Carson said.

The study also released other interesting statistics about tablet owners.

Whereas women trump men in TV viewing, online video viewing, blogging and smartphone usage, men make up the majority in tablet usage. Most tablet users are 18 to 34 years old. Tablets are mostly used at home, Nielsen reports. Only 30% use the bulky device on-the-go.

Which tablet apps are you willing to pay for? Tell us in the comments.

Outlaw mountain men, extremists roam the Rockies

SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - One is a loner who has eluded capture on Utah's rugged Cedar Mountain for five years. Another is hiding out in the mountain forests of western Montana, wanted for attempted murder.

They are extreme versions of the self-reliant, independent-thinking frontiersmen who have long roamed the American West.

From wanted criminals to the more eccentric "Phantom Pooper" or "Dugout Dick," a wide range of outlaws and drifters live off the land in the rugged Rocky Mountains, folk heroes to the militia movement and a source of chagrin for law enforcement.

Among the more storied is Troy James Knapp, 44, a loner wanted for burglaries of resort cabins near Zion National Park in Utah. In his five years in the wild, he has lived off land so rugged the average visitor stocks his four-wheel drive with emergency supplies.

Legend about Knapp's uncanny outdoor skills and hardiness has grown along with the thefts he is accused of committing - frequently of firearms - and the threats he has made against a local sheriff in the forested high country of southern Utah called Cedar Mountain.

The snowshoe-clad survivalist has out-maneuvered authorities in manhunts, one as recently as last month when a reported sighting of a rifle-toting figure sent police in camouflage and bullet-proof vests pouring into the woods on foot and by air.

Knapp is one of a number of fugitives thought to be holed up in the vast back country of the Rocky Mountains, a region where self-sufficiency is almost a religion and separatist and militia movements have found fertile ground.

The forbidding mountainscape has given rise to characters such as 19th century trapper and explorer Kit Carson, and has acted as a magnet for modern-day mountain men and outlaws such as Claude Dallas.

Dallas was convicted in 1982 of manslaughter in the slayings of two Idaho game wardens investigating him for poaching while living off the canyon lands of southwestern Idaho.

After the killings, Dallas fled into the wilderness and eluded police for months. During his time on the run, he gained cult status among anti-government militiamen and was portrayed in a popular ballad as a renegade hero.

FOLK HERO OR CRIMINAL?

Aided by survival skills a U.S. marshal has likened to those of American frontiersman Davy Crockett, Knapp and a handful of other back country drifters are folkloric figures to fiercely anti-authority loners and groups of the American West, and their hostility seems to center on law enforcement officials.

In Cedar Mountain, the specter of an armed loner who may harbor extremist views has stoked fear among seasonal residents and vacation homeowners from Las Vegas.

"This guy is not a folk hero, he's a dangerous criminal," said Jud Hendrickson, whose family getaway property straddles the area where Knapp is known to roam. "People are going to get hurt before this is over."

Authorities say break-ins mostly occur in winter, when the frigid weather and deep snow drive Knapp indoors in search of food, equipment and guns.

Those weapons have reappeared in what Iron County, Utah, Detective Sergeant Jody Edwards calls "doomsday stashes" in camps Knapp erects deep in the woods in mild weather.

Knapp runs trap lines, shoots squirrels and has trekked across hundreds of miles of harsh terrain. He is uninterested in valuables many thieves would prize, said Michael Wingert, supervisory deputy for the U.S. Marshals Service in Utah.

"If a cabin owner left a gold brooch on the table, he probably wouldn't touch it," Wingert said. "Outside of reading about Davy Crockett, I can't tell you the last time I've encountered a case like this."

In Montana, authorities are following up on hundreds of tips on the whereabouts of former militia leader David Burgert, 48.

Burgert is wanted on attempted murder charges for a shootout with Missoula County deputies in June, when authorities say he fired a handgun at officers before escaping into the tangled back country of western Montana.

Missoula County Undersheriff Mike Dominick said Burgert, sentenced in 2004 to seven years in federal prison on weapons charges, is a survivalist able to fend for himself in the wilds.

"He's in desperate circumstances and we believe him to be a particular problem for local law enforcement. His animosity is directed at us," Dominick said.

OPEN SPACES

The challenge in the wide-open spaces of the western United States is telling the difference between harmless hermits and recluses - and dangerous sociopaths. While the behavior of eccentrics in the western hinterlands may be objectionable, it isn't usually criminal, authorities said.

Police in Idaho have grappled with the socially unacceptable behavior of individuals like the "Phantom Pooper," who defecated on properties in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness.

Then there's "Dugout Dick," a squatter on public lands who irrigated his asparagus crop with urine, and rented out caves he carved into the rocky outcroppings above the Salmon River.

"There are plenty of people with anti-social behavior out there who never really bother anybody," said Tony Latham, a retired Idaho Fish and Game investigator.

The Southern Poverty Law Center released a report on March 8 showing a sharp rise in anti-government groups between 2010 and 2011. The report came after an FBI warning in February that extremists opposed to the central government pose a growing threat to local law enforcement.

Such "sovereign citizens" were mostly known for filing arcane lawsuits against government officials, refusing to pay taxes and displaying phony license plates before May 2010, when two Arkansas police officers were gunned down during a traffic stop of a member of the movement.

"That was a wake-up call for everybody," said Don Robinson, FBI supervisory special agent in Idaho.

Police are the preferred targets, said Mark Potok, senior fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Extremists espouse a patchwork of beliefs where one conspiracy about the government overlaps another, Potok said, and the worry is knowing when "today's eccentric becomes tomorrow's building bomber."

Militias movements tend to come in waves, like that which spiked in 1995 when Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh killed 168 people. A second wave of separatist activism began in early 2009 after the election of an African-American president with a foreign-sounding name.

The rebirth of fringe movements may also be linked to the economic downturn, fears that Democratic leaders will impose new restrictions on guns and ultra-right rhetoric in the media, he said.

The FBI's Robinson said what concerns authorities most is the "lone offender," the under-the-radar extremist who suddenly surfaces in an act of spectacular violence.

Police also worry about what they call the "time bomb," the sometime offender whose potential for violence escalates over time. That's how Edwards, the Utah detective, views Knapp, who recently pledged to put a neighboring sheriff "in the ground" in a note left behind at a burgled cabin.

"We have a dangerous situation on our hands," Edwards said.

Ideas To Help You Achieve Your House Improvement Goals

HTML Ready Article. Click on the "Copy" button to copy into your clipboard.

By: Melinda Kingston

So, you decided that you want to start improving your home. That's very good. There is a lot of hard work involved to improve your home properly. Do you know what you need to know to do it right? If you don't, you should look at these tips listed below.

In order to properly renovate your kitchen when taking on a home improvement project, it is important that you shut off the water. If any accidents happen such as accidentally hitting a pipe, the mistake of flooding the whole kitchen can be prevented. It is better to be safe than sorry.

After some initial use, your kitchen cabinets can start to lose their luster. You can shine up kitchen cabinetry by using car wax. Apply some car wax liberally to a towel and wipe your cabinets down in a circular motion. This can make your cabinets appear like they're new and shiny.

Amongst all the other home improvements you need to create a rental suite, put a separate entrance above all else. You will appreciate it when your renters don't bump into you as you're trying to get your groceries inside the house, and they will give you a higher rent amount for the privilege.

When creating a budget for a home improvement project, make sure that you factor in "small" expenses like nails, tools, tape, and so forth. The cost of these surprises can really impact your overall budget and leave you scratching your head about how you spent so much. It's better to plan for them ahead of time.

If you are stuck with a boring steel front door, and can't afford a new one, try painting it an interesting color, or choose a paint with special effects. You could also apply some kind of faux-finish to make it appear more interesting and expensive!

When it comes to home improvement, consider adding extra insulation to your home to assist with your cooling costs in the summer and heating costs in the winter. This will save you money as well as keep you and your family more comfortable. The two best ways to insulate are to add weather strips to your doors and ensure that your attic is lined.

The kitchen is usually the room that sells the place. Take a look around and see if there are any inexpensive things you can do to your kitchen to make it look recently update. Get rid of that wallpaper or add hardware to your cabinets. Do whatever is simple and quick, but effective. You will be able to mention the update in you listing and buyers like seeing that.

Home improvement can also be called a honey do list. If you have one of these lists, make sure you work diligently to complete each project on the list. The list may seem never-ending, but the jobs will ultimately make your house a better, safer place to live.

Before you begin painting a room it is important to lay down drop clothes or old sheets on the floor. When painting a room it is very possible to have paint drip or spill on the floor. Regardless of what type of floor you have it can be very difficult to get paint up once it is on a surface.

Reuse as much as possible during your home improvement to save money and help the environment. If you can paint your cabinets to give them a new look, why not? Replace the knobs or handles on them as well to modernize their look. Consider painting tile instead of replacing it to freshen a room.

If your radiator has gone cold, you may need to bleed it. Simply switch off the boiler and locate the bleed key. Turn the key counterclockwise and air will begin to escape and make a hissing sound. When the sound stops and a little water leaks, turn the bleed key clockwise to close it.

Upgrade your kitchen to improve home value quickly. Kitchen improvements can be as simple as refreshing paint or wallpaper or as complex as installing new cabinetry, appliances or flooring. You can do most kitchen improvements yourself or contract with a professional for more difficult items. Investing in your kitchen makes your home more enjoyable for yourself and your family, and it also increases the home value should you ever decide to sell your house.

Ask your friends and family who they recommend to help you complete home improvement work. You'll know if the recommendation is good or not because you'll have access to the home where the work was done, and your adviser will be able to tell you honestly how dealing with the contractor worked out.

Even if you have done some home improvement projects in the past and received great results, you want to know the secret tips and advice that lies within the world of home improvement. You can never learn too much as there is always a strategy or technique you haven't considered. The advice in this article could be a great stepping stone for learning a lot more.

A new treatment option for Clostridium difficile: Fecal transplantation

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Fecal transplantation through colonoscopy is an effective treatment for recurrent Clostridium difficile infection (CDI), according to a new study in Gastroenterology, the official journal of the American Gastroenterological Association. Additionally, the mortality rate in this study does not appear to be greater than in some previously reported series, suggesting that fecal transplantation itself seems to be a rather safe procedure. CDI is a common cause of both community- and hospital-acquired diarrhea, usually occurring after exposure to antibiotics.

"Our results suggest that fecal transplantation is clearly better than any other treatment for recurrent Clostridium difficile infection," said Eero Mattila, MD, of Helsinki University Central Hospital, Finland, and lead author of this study. "Although fecal transplantation is not simple to perform and it has potential risks, it is an effective option."

A team of researchers reviewed records from 70 patients ? across five hospitals ? with recurrent CDI who had undergone fecal transplantation through colonoscopy. Donor stool was manually homogenized before transplantation, and fecal transplantation was performed at colonoscopy by infusing fresh donor feces into the cecum. During the first 12 weeks after fecal transplantation, symptoms were alleviated in all patients who did not have the dangerous Clostridium difficile 027 strain. Of the 36 patients with this strain, 89 percent had a favorable response. After the initial 12 weeks of follow-up, no serious adverse events related to fecal transplantation could be observed during a one-year period. This is an outstanding result in a patient group unresponsive to other treatment methods.

During the past few years, CDI has become more frequent, more severe, more resistent to standard treatment, and more likely to relapse. Current treatment with antibiotics is suboptimal and has limited efficacy, leading to recurrences in up to 50 percent of patients. However, a number of new approaches have been used to treat multiple CDI recurrences, and currently, there are a few attractive treatment options for relapsing disease.

Ahmadinejad grilled by hostile Iran parliament

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was summoned to parliament on Wednesday for an unprecedented grilling by lawmakers who accused him of economic mismanagement and making "illegal" appointments.

Less than two weeks after a drubbing in parliamentary elections, Ahmadinejad became the first president in the Islamic Republic's history to be called before the legislature which has the power to impeach him if unsatisfied with his answers.

Factions who express complete loyalty to Iran's most powerful figure, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have been trying to summon the president for months over what they say are repeated challenges to the supreme leader's authority.

Emboldened by their success over Ahmadinejad supporters at parliamentary elections this month, they finally had the chance to interrogate him about the near-stagnant, high-inflation economy and concerns over his allegiance to Khamenei.

Asking the questions, lawmaker Ali Motahari asked why Ahmadinejad had stayed at home for several days last April after Khamenei overturned the president's decision to sack his intelligence minister - an absence seen by some as a protest against the supreme leader's decision.

Belying his weakened standing, Ahmadinejad responded in a confident and, at times, flippant tone that did little to calm the excitement of the hearing, broadcast live on state radio.

He denied challenging the supreme leader, saying: "This is one of those things - Ahmadinejad staying home and resting. Some of my friends have repeatedly told me to rest. In this government, work has never been stopped for even a day."

BLAME

He played down the historic significance of the summons, saying it was parliament's right and not out of the ordinary.

"I was ready to answer questions before the election," he said. "But I thought it might have an impact on election results and then I would be blamed for it. I am the easiest to blame."

After an hour-long grilling that included questions on the botched financing of the Tehran metro and the veracity of government figures showing the creation of 1.6 million jobs in 2009 and 2010, many parliamentarians remained unimpressed.

"Ahmadinejad's answers to lawmakers' questions were illogical, illegal and an attempt to avoid answering them. With an insulting tone, Ahmadinejad made fun of lawmakers' questions and insulted parliament," Mohammad Taqi Rahbar was quoted as saying by parliament's news agency.

Having made several ministerial appointments that were unpopular with parliament - including briefly taking charge of the oil ministry, in charge of Iran's biggest economic sector - Ahmadinejad was questioned about how he picked people for key posts.

Outgoing reformist lawmaker Mostafa Kavakebian said: "The president did not give any logical answers and took everything as a joke."

"Is this a place to joke?" another parliamentarian, Mohammad Reza Khabbaz asked the assembly.

Iran's English-language television channel, Press TV, reported that some deputies had been riled by Ahmadinejad's mocking language and, after the session, made threats to impeach him after the Iranian new year holiday later this month.

But analysts said that was unlikely.

SERIOUS CHALLENGE

Ali Ansari of St Andrews University in Scotland characterized the hearing as a "not serious bit of bloodletting".

"Khamenei is clearly in charge and regards Ahmadinejad as too useful and divisive a figure to get rid of. Heaven forbid that a competent and well liked president take office who might pose a serious challenge to Khamenei," he added.

Tehran-based Professor Sadeq Zibakalam said Ahmadinejad's tone showed he was not a spent force.

"Some conservatives want to get rid of him before his term is over," he said. "Ahmadinejad showed today that it won't be easy to do. By being firm and not taking conservatives seriously, he's become stronger."

Mohammad Marandi of the University of Tehran said Ahmadinejad's failure to adequately answer questions about his differences with the supreme leader showed "a weak spot" but that he remained popular among ordinary Iranians.

"I don't think he'll be impeached," Marandi said. "This parliament doesn't have the motive at this stage. They are critics and want to keep him in check."

Analysts are now eyeing the make-up of the new parliament to assess the extent of the damage inflicted on the pro-Ahmadinejad faction during the parliamentary elections.

Zibakalam said it was still unclear whether the more than 70 newly-elected independent members would stand with or against Ahmadinejad during his remaining time in office which expires mid-2013.

Initially lauded by conservatives for his radical views on Israel and the West, attacks on Ahmadinejad by rival hardliners in parliament increased after last year's spat over the intelligence minister with his critics saying any challenge to Khamenei threatens the foundations of the Islamic Republic.

ScienceOnline2012 interview with Jessica Morrison

Every year I ask some of the attendees of the ScienceOnline conferences to tell me (and my readers) more about themselves, their careers, current projects and their views on the use of the Web in science, science education or science communication. So now we continue with the participants of ScienceOnline2012. See all the interviews in this series here.

Today my guest is Jessica Morrison (blog, Twitter).

Welcome to A Blog Around The Clock. Would you, please, tell my readers a little bit more about yourself? Where are you coming from (both geographically and philosophically)? What is your background? Any scientific education?

Hey there. I?m a Ph.D. student in Civil Engineering and Geological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame. You all know we have a football team, but everyone always asks, ?So where is the University of Notre Dame?? It?s in South Bend, Indiana, about 90 minutes east of Chicago. I live in the Midwest for now, but my heart will always be in the South.

I have a B.S. in geology from Middle Tennessee State University, and I?m about a year away from completing a Ph.D. in actinide geochemistry. What?s this mean? I synthesize inorganic compounds featuring our radioactive friends on the bottom row of the periodic table. This basic research has broader implications for nuclear fuel storage and environmental remediation.

Tell us a little more about your career trajectory so far: interesting projects past and present?

It?s hard to call it a career so far. I?ve basically been a student my entire life. The type of student has changed dramatically though. I started college as an advertising major. Don?t hate me yet! I was into art, and I wanted to make money. I was 18. I quickly switched into journalism, and just as quickly fell in love with geology. Fewer than 7 years later, I?m ABD in a science Ph.D. program.

The most exciting aspect of my graduate work is that I work with radioactive elements. My dissertation work involves both uranium and its periodic neighbor, neptunium. The folks in my lab take special precautions while working ?hot,? it?s completely safe?and no we don?t glow in the dark!

What is taking up the most of your time and passion these days? What are your goals?

For about a year now, I?ve been writing about science as often as I can. I discovered early on in graduate school that I had not actually left journalism behind when I fell in love with geology. When I finish my degree at Notre Dame, I hope to chase a career in science journalism. I?m currently a semi-finalist for a science media fellowship, and I?ve been applying for media internships . With any luck, this summer I?ll be interning at a newsroom near you!

What aspect of science communication and/or particular use of the Web in science interests you the most?

I haven?t always been interested in science. Throughout primary and secondary school I preferred art, literature and history. I?m still completely in awe that I can be a scientist?and I want to share that with other people who have no idea this is even possible.

Now that I?ve become a part of the science writing community online, I am blown away by how connected we all are. The Web allows us to become lampposts throughout the world that cast a science-y light onto our surrounding. We?re sucking them into our science jet engines?mwahaha. [Aside: Yeah, metaphors, I don't know.]

How does (if it does) blogging figure in your work? How about social networks, e.g., Twitter, Google Plus and Facebook? Do you find all this online activity to be a net positive (or even a necessity) in what you do?

Blogging doesn?t factor into my actual paid work?yet. I blog personally at ihearttheroad.com, and I occasionally contribute to the Scientific American Guest Blog. I also participate actively on Facebook, Twitter and Google+. I absolutely would not be as successful as I am now without the science writing friends that I met through Twitter?starting with @stevesilberman and then @BoraZ. Thanks guys!

When and how did you first discover science blogs? What are some of your favourites? Have you discovered any cool science blogs by the participants at the Conference?

I first discovered science blogs through @stevesilberman. He?s a serious force when it comes to posting science news. I don?t spend as much time as I would like reading science blogs, but the big ones pop up on my radar almost every day.

One of my favorite pieces of work on a science blog was @edyong209?s post containing the transcript of Robert Krulwich?s 2011 commencement speech to the Berkeley School of Journalism. I?m obsessed with the idea of becoming a journalist, and while I flail about, Krulwich?s words remind me to keep flailing until I do it well.

What was the best aspect of ScienceOnline2012 for you? Any suggestions for next year? Is there anything that happened at this Conference ? a session, something someone said or did or wrote ? that will change the way you think about science communication, or something that you will take with you to your job, blog-reading and blog-writing?

Going to ScienceOnline2012 was like going to a family reunion?even though I?d never met anyone there. I made new friends, met old ones and spent a lot of time marveling at just how much @David_Dobbs looked like a real journalist. [Aside: I've played "Spot the Geologist" many times, "Spot the Journalist" was a totally new experience.]

Through #scio12 I also met a bunch of people I?d see again at AAAS 2012. I went to AAAS with press credentials, an experience that blew my mind. I?ll be honest, I?m terrified that I?ll somehow miss registration for ScienceOnline2013. If I were to have a recurring nightmare, this would be it.

Thank you for the interview. Looking forward to seeing you again next January!
