Those too young to remember when the Walkman first appeared might compare it with the advent of the iPod, but keep in mind that when Apple came along MP3 players were already on the market. Push forward a bit more and you get Betamax whose quality far surpassed that of the VHS and which ushered in home recording and the ability to watch actual movies at home. Then came the PlayStation 3 (PS3), which eschewed conventional wisdom and contained a Blu-ray player, not DVD, in to the case ? opening the way not just for high-resolution video games but also for doing the same for movies. But as regards the PS3, there?s more to it when it comes to 3D.

Sorry for the 3D 101, but for a video source player to send a 3D picture, the output has to have been built in. This means if you don?t have a 3D-capable player, you must buy one since the output can?t be modified but rather it must be replaced entirely. Surprisingly, the output on the PS3 doesn?t have this problem ? including their first generation model, which is the one I have. Updates to the system, for sure, but no having to buy a new one. How cool is that?

But as Porky wouldn?t say, ?That?s not all, folks.? Sony has made 3D titles and promotional materials available through their network and otherwise so that PS3 owners with 3D TVs can get into the game (bad pun, yep). Part of this comes from the titles which, to be fair, have yet to reach a critical mass (as in a PS3 game so amazing, you have to have it and wow ? it?s in 3D!). Combine that with the PS3?s MOVE controller (think the Wii?s wand) and virtual environments in 3D become even more appealing.

Sony hasn?t been shy about talking up 3D. A recent report from them has listed over 115 games being out there (including some still in development). Some with MOVE support and some without. The important thing being that these games are worth playing because the 3D makes sense to have: Star Trek based on the movie should fit in here well when it appears, especially since the MOVE controller will go inside a Phaser gun shell included with the game (OK, we agree that setting to ?Stun? is clich? but?).

So while Nintendo has pretty much cornered the 3D market for portables, Sony looks to be the ?big boy? when it comes to 3D console gaming. Maybe the big N and the big M will take the hint?

McCall, ID ? CIMBA, our local mountain biking association, will be hosting the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) for four days of club, community, and trail education.

CIMBA is honored to have been selected amongst hundreds of applicants. The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew is a grassroots educational program and an authority on sustainable trail building practices. Two teams of professional trail experts travel year-round throughout the United States and beyond, leading trail work sessions, meeting with land managers and working with IMBA-affiliated clubs and the communities they serve to improve mountain biking opportunities. The Trail Care Crew program has inspired great volunteer trail work and is a big help to government agencies and land managers who have limited funding for trail construction and upkeep.
According to Sidney Bateman, CIMBA Membership Director, ?The TCC arrives at a pivotal time for us. Based on the success of the trails in Bear Basin, we are eager to develop and expand more mountain bike specific trails in our area. We hope this event will help us gain more support and involvement from our community and members.?

People often ask me why I decided to adopt from foster care. As with so many things in life, there is no one simple answer. My husband and I had a desire to grow our family and a vague awareness that there was a need for parents to adopt older children, who are considered difficult to place compared to infants and toddlers. (I'm even more conscious of that need now, having since acquired additional awareness about the challenges faced by teens who age out of foster care without finding permanency with adoptive families.) I thought that my husband and I would be good candidates to parent an older child. Though I had loved parenting my biological daughter Mackenzie when she was an infant, I had also enjoyed moving into later stages of child development. I didn't really want to return to the baby stage. I'm a word person -- I like interacting with children when they have acquired language and I enjoy them even more as their sophistication with language increases; my husband is similar to me in this regard. I have enjoyed every stage of parenting, and I have never wanted to go back to an earlier one. I seem to like each stage better than the one before. (So far, at least. I'm aware that I may feel differently when the teen years arrive.) Adopting a child who was close in age to the one we already had allowed us to stay at the same general stage of development, more or less. (Because of her challenging history, there are some ways that our adopted daughter is developmentally "younger" than her chronological age, but that discrepancy is decreasing already and will likely continue to dissipate.)

Prior to becoming a foster-adopt parent, I had read a lot of books about trauma and attachment issues (including Heather Forbes'?Beyond Consequences?books, which were especially helpful in increasing my understanding of the child's fears and anxieties, though, to be honest, I never quite mastered her techniques). I believed that I had a pretty good grasp of the challenges we were likely to encounter, and I believed that my husband and I were up to those challenges. I underestimated. I really could not have imagined just how challenging the first year would be. Ashley entered our home with a lot of emotional baggage and behavioral issues. In the beginning, we experienced melt-downs almost daily. She swore at us. She threw things. She destroyed things. She hit.

But after each one of these melt-downs (and she wasn't always the one having the melt-down -- sometimes it was me!), we would find our way back to connection, and she learned that we were going to stick with her no matter what. We weren't going to send her away (as previous foster parents had done) when she "misbehaved." Over time, the difficult behaviors decreased and the good days increased. Eventually, the good days became the norm. Today, she is a different child. The aggressive behaviors are gone, and the truly amazing child that she is has emerged.

Would I go back and do it all again? In a second! Yes, those early months of her placement with us were difficult, but the joyful outcome is worth every one of those "labor pains."?

Police Department, Walmart to host Bike Rodeo - Tewksbury, MA ...

The Tewksbury Police Department would like to help ensure the safety of local children by hosting a bike rodeo at the Tewksbury Wal-Mart, 333 Main St., on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.- (rain date Oct. 2.)

?On average, 250 children in the United States under the age of 14 die each year because of a bicycle crash. Another 300,000 children are treated in emergency rooms for severe head injuries. Many of these accidents could have been prevented if these children were riding safe bikes, wore bicycle helmets, and knew the basics about safe bike riding.

Along with the Tewksbury Police Department, Wal-Mart, Lowell General Hospital, AAA Merrimack Valley, and several local businesses are doing their part to decrease bicycle fatalities and injuries.

At the rodeo, members from the Emergency Department at Lowell General Hospital will be educating the public- children, parents, and even adult cyclists- to the need for head protection. Tewksbury Police Department would like to not only encourage children to wear a bike helmet, but to also wear them correctly.

Bicycle helmets can reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85%.? Wearing a bicycle helmet is such a simple way to help ensure your child?s safety. Parents may think their children are safe riding around the neighborhood, however, research tells us that most serious bicycle crashes occur on a quiet neighborhood street.

Ten tips for safe bike riding: (from Consumer Product Safety Commission):

• 1. Always wear a bike helmet.
• 2. Stop and check traffic before riding into a street.
• 3. Don?t ride at night.
• 4. Obey traffic signs and signals.
• 5. Ride on the right-hand side of the street.
• 6. Check your brakes before riding.
• 7. Give cars and pedestrians the right-of-way.
• 8. Wear light or bright-colored clothing so that motorists can see you.
• 9. Be extra careful turning left ? motorists don?t expect it.
• 10. Avoid broken pavement, loose gravel and leaves ? which can cause you to lose control of your bike.
