Chapter 1
The Secret

My father, James Witherspoon, is a bigamist. He was already married ten years when he first clamped eyes on my mother. In 1968, she was working at the gift-wrap counter at Davison's downtown when my father asked her to wrap the carving knife he had bought his wife for their wedding an?niversary. Mother said she knew that something wasn't right between a man and a woman when the gift was a blade. I said that maybe it means there was a kind of trust between them. I love my mother, but we tend to see things a little bit differently. The point is that James's marriage was never hidden from us. James is what I call him. His other daughter, Chaurisse, the one who grew up in the house with him, she calls him Daddy, even now.

When most people think of bigamy, if they think of it at all, they imagine some primitive practice taking place on the pages of National Geographic. In Atlanta, we remember one sect of the back-to-Africa movement that used to run bakeries in the West End. Some people said it was a cult, others called it a cultural movement. Whatever it was, it involved four wives for each husband. The bakeries have since closed down, but sometimes we still see the women, resplendent in white, trailing six humble paces behind their mutual husband. Even in Baptist churches, ushers keep smelling salts on the ready for the new widow confronted at the wake by the other grieving widow and her stair-step kids. Undertakers and judges know that it hap?pens all the time, and not just between religious fanatics, travel?ing salesmen, handsome sociopaths, and desperate women.

It's a shame that there isn't a true name for a woman like my mother, Gwendolyn. My father, James, is a bigamist. That is what he is. Laverne is his wife. She found him first and my mother has always respected the other woman's squatter's rights. But was my mother his wife, too? She has legal documents and even a single Polaroid proving that she stood with James Alexander Witherspoon Junior in front of a judge just over the state line in Alabama. However, to call her only his "wife" doesn't really explain the full complexity of her position.

There are other terms, I know, and when she is tipsy, angry, or sad, Mother uses them to describe herself: concubine, whore, mistress, consort. There are just so many, and none are fair. And there are nasty words, too, for a person like me, the child of a person like her, but these words were not allowed in the air of our home. "You are his daughter. End of story." If this was ever true it was in the first four months of my life, before Chaurisse, his legitimate daughter, was born. My mother would curse at hearing me use that word, legitimate, but if she could hear the other word that formed in my head, she would close herself in her bedroom and cry. In my mind, Chaurisse is his real daughter. With wives, it only matters who gets there first. With daughters, the situation is a bit more complicated.

It matters what you called things. Surveil was my mother's word. If he knew, James would probably say spy, but that is too sinister. We didn't do damage to anyone but ourselves as we trailed Chaurisse and Laverne while they wound their way through their easy lives. I had always imagined that we would eventually be asked to explain ourselves, to press words forward in our own defense. On that day, my mother would be called upon to do the talking. She is gifted with language and is able to layer difficult details in such a way that the result is smooth as water. She is a magician who can make the whole world feel like a dizzy illusion. The truth is a coin she pulls from behind your ear.

Maybe mine was not a blissful girlhood. But is anyone's? Even people whose parents are happily married to each other and no one else, even these people have their share of unhappi?ness. They spend plenty of time nursing old slights, rehashing squabbles. So you see, I have something in common with the whole world.

Mother didn't ruin my childhood or anyone's marriage. She is a good person. She prepared me. Life, you see, is all about knowing things. That is why my mother and I shouldn't be pitied. Yes, we have suffered, but we never doubted that we enjoyed at least one peculiar advantage when it came to what really mattered: I knew about Chaurisse; she didn't know about me. My mother knew about Laverne, but Laverne was under the impression that hers was an ordinary life. We never lost track of that basic and fundamental fact.

When did I first discover that although I was an only child, my father was not my father and mine alone? I really can't say. It's something that I've known for as long as I've known that I had a father. I can only say for sure when I learned that this type of double-duty daddy wasn't ordinary.

I was about five years old, in kindergarten, when the art teacher, Miss Russell, asked us to draw pictures of our fami?lies. While all the other children scribbled with their cray?ons or soft-leaded pencils, I used a blue-ink pen and drew James, Chaurisse, and Laverne. In the background was Raleigh, my father's best friend, the only person we knew from his other life. I drew him with the crayon labeled "Flesh" be?cause he is really light-skinned. This was years and years ago, but I still remember. I hung a necklace around the wife's neck. I gave the girl a big smile, stuffed with square teeth. Near the left margin, I drew my mother and me standing by ourselves. With a marker, I blacked in Mother's long hair and curving lashes. On my own face, I drew only a pair of wide eyes. Above, a friendly sun winked at all six of us.

The art teacher approached me from behind. "Now, who are these people you've drawn so beautifully?"

Charmed, I smiled up at her. "My family. My daddy has two wifes and two girls."

Cocking her head, she said, "I see."

I didn't think much more about it. I was still enjoying the memory of the way she pronounced beautifully. To this day, when I hear anyone say that word, I feel loved. At the end of the month, I brought all of my drawings home in a cardboard folder. James opened up his wallet, which he kept plump with two-dollar bills to reward me for my schoolwork. I saved the portrait, my masterpiece, for last, being as it was so beautifully drawn and everything.

My father picked the page up from the table and held it close to his face like he was looking for a coded message. Mother stood behind me, crossed her arms over my chest, and bent to place a kiss on the top of my head. "It's okay," she said.

"Did you tell your teacher who was in the picture?" James said.

I nodded slowly, the whole time thinking that I probably should lie, although I wasn't quite sure why.

"James," Mother said, "let's not make a molehill into a moun?tain. She's just a child."

"Gwen," he said, "this is important. Don't look so scared. I'm not going to take her out behind the woodshed." Then he chuckled, but my mother didn't laugh.

"All she did was draw a picture. Kids draw pictures."

"Go on in the kitchen, Gwen," James said. "Let me talk to my daughter."

My mother said, "Why can't I stay in here? She's my daugh?ter, too."

"You are with her all the time. You tell me I don't spend enough time talking to her. So now let me talk."

Mother hesitated and then released me. "She's just a little kid, James. She doesn't even know the ins and outs yet."

"Trust me," James said.

She left the room, but I don't know that she trusted him not to say something that would leave me wounded and broken-winged for life. I could see it in her face. When she was upset she moved her jaw around invisible gum. At night, I could hear her in her room, grinding her teeth in her sleep. The sound was like gravel under car wheels.

"Dana, come here." James was wearing a navy chauffeur's uniform. His hat must have been in the car, but I could see the ridged mark across his forehead where the hatband usually rested. "Come closer," he said.

I hesitated, looking to the space in the doorway where Mother had disappeared.

"Dana," he said, "you're not afraid of me, are you? You're not scared of your own father, are you?"

His voice sounded mournful, but I took it as a dare. "No, sir," I said, taking a bold step forward.

"Don't call me sir, Dana. I'm not your boss. When you say that, it makes me feel like an overseer."

I shrugged. Mother told me that I should always call him sir. With a sudden motion, he reached out for me and lifted me up on his lap. He spoke to me with both of our faces looking outward, so I couldn't see his expression.

"Dana, I can't have you making drawings like the one you made for your art class. I can't have you doing things like that. What goes on in this house between your mother and me is grown people's business. I love you. You are my baby girl, and I love you, and I love your mama. But what we do in this house has to be a secret, okay?"

"I didn't even draw this house."

James sighed and bounced me on his lap a little bit. "What happens in my life, in my world, doesn't have anything to do with you. You can't tell your teacher that your daddy has another wife. You can't tell your teacher that my name is James Witherspoon. Atlanta ain't nothing but a country town, and everyone knows everybody."

"Your other wife and your other girl is a secret?" I asked him.

He put me down from his lap, so we could look each other in the face. "No. You've got it the wrong way around. Dana, you are the one that's a secret."

Then he patted me on the head and tugged one of my braids. With a wink he pulled out his billfold and separated three two-dollar bills from the stack. He handed them over to me and I clamped them in my palm.

"Aren't you going to put them in your pocket?"

"Yes, sir."

And for once, he didn't tell me not to call him that.

James took me by the hand and we walked down the hallway to the kitchen for dinner. I closed my eyes on the short walk because I didn't like the wallpaper in the hallway. It was beige with a burgundy pattern. When it had started peeling at the edges, I was accused of picking at the seams. I denied it over and over again, but Mother reported me to James on his weekly visit. He took off his belt and swatted me around the legs and up on my backside, which seemed to satisfy something in my mother.

In the kitchen my mother placed the bowls and plates on the glass table in silence. She wore her favorite apron that James brought back from New Orleans. On the front was a draw?ing of a crawfish holding a spatula aloft and a caption: don't make me poison your food! James took his place at the head of the table and polished the water spots from his fork with his napkin. "I didn't lay a hand on her; I didn't even raise my voice. Did I?"

"No, sir." And this was entirely the truth, but I felt different than I had just a few minutes before when I'd pulled my draw?ing out of its sleeve. My skin stayed the same while this differ?ence snuck in through a pore and attached itself to whatever brittle part forms my center. You are the secret. He'd said it with a smile, touching the tip of my nose with the pad of his finger.

My mother came around and picked me up under my arms and sat me on the stack of phone books in my chair. She kissed my cheek and fixed a plate with salmon croquettes, a spoon of green beans, and corn.

"Are you okay?"

I nodded.

James ate his meal, spooning honey onto a dinner roll when my mother said there would be no dessert. He drank a big glass of Coke.

"Don't eat too much," my mother said. "You'll have to eat again in a little while."

"I'm always happy to eat your food, Gwen. I'm always happy to sit at your table."

Razer Nostromo Expert Gaming Pad Review - Gadgets.Tekhis|TEKHIS ...

The concept of a separate custom designed WSAD keypad has been in existence for half a decade now, with products such as Saitek Cyborg gaming pad, Wolf Claw and variants, the very unwieldy?Claw, and Belkin?s Nostromo N52 Speedpad. However, the idea of a dedicated gaming keypad hasn?t quite caught on. But do you really need one? Yes, if you are in the market for gaming keyboard, which is rendered practically redundant?by gaming keypads. That?s because almost all contemporary videogames require a keyboard-mouse combo, where the WASD configuration uses only 25 percent of the keyboard. A gaming keyboard therefore lengthens an existing bulky design with additional macro keys, when it should ideally do away with 70 percent of the keyboard that serves no gaming purpose.

An oversized gaming keyboard, when combined with a?large mouse mat, spreads your arms in an awkward V-shape that will eventually give you sore joints, in addition to bullying you into using only a fraction of your expensive mouse mat. This can be fixed with gaming keypads such as the Razer Nostromo or the Logitech G13 Advanced Gameboard. Their tiny footprint ensures improved ergonomics and allows optimum utilisation of extra-large mouse mats. Now that it?s established why you need one, let?s see if the Razer Nostromo gaming keypad has what it takes to edge out your keyboard.
The very first thing we noticed about the Nostromo was the most disturbing. Apparently, the suits at Razer have struck a?deal with?Belkin that allows them to rebadge the Nostromo N52 Speedpad as the Razer Nostromo. While?the gaming gear manufacturer?has successfully improved upon existing products such as the?Razer Onza ? a precision engineered version of the Xbox 360 controller ? the operative word here is ?improve?. The Razer Nostromo is Belkin?s N52 Speedpad with a trademark black colour scheme and some backlighting thrown in for measure. Is the Belkin so perfect that Razer?s engineers found no possible way to improve its design, or is the gaming gear veteran simply being cheap and lazy with a soulless rebadge. Well, that?s what we?re here to find out.

115208 razernostromo03 Razer Nostromo Expert Gaming Pad Review

Nostromo?s quarter kilo heft ensures that it won?t squirm under your palm thanks to six sticky rubber feet. Most gaming keypads require one to get used to a radically new layout, but that isn?t the case with this?device.?This gaming pad has the same WSAD configuration placed in a perfectly aligned grid, as opposed to staggered rows of keys found in a regular keyboard. I found Razer?s symmetric grid of 14 face-keys more intuitive than the?one found in a regular keyboard. Nostromo?s grid has three separate clusters of keys segregated intuitively by their roles. Moreover, each cluster features face-keys set at different angles and varying depths, which makes touch-typing (or touch-gaming in this case) an effortless affair.
The face-key placement is well thought-out and effective. Razer, however, cannot claim any design credit for the rebadge. The WSAD movement keys, Q/E leaning keys, and R/F keys for reload and use functions are arranged in a discrete 2?4 grid. The ZXC modifiers, employed for crouching and going prone, form the second cluster that?s placed at a lower height. This, when combined with their sharp angle, helps your fingers slide unobtrusively from the WSAD cluster and on to the ZXC keys. The final cluster of face-keys features the Tab, Caps Lock, and Shift modifiers ? again placed at a different height, angle, and slightly offset along the vertical axis. The Shift key has an acute angle that makes it easy to locate the oft-used sprint modifier.

This is where things go downhill, as the rest of the design negates good karma of the face-keys. The ergonomic wrist-pad conforms to the shape of the palm, but its huge hump makes it impossible for one to use the thumb with the face-keys. Yes, the opposable thumb ? nature?s greatest gift to mankind and the most dextrous appendage in the human body. Using the WSAD keys without a thumb is manageable until the point one has to hit the ZXC modifiers. It?s nigh impossible to crouch or go prone by holding the modifiers with your ring, index, or middle finger. By then you would have?run out of digits, if you intend to use the WASD keys to move in co

The spacebar is replicated by a Caps Lock sized button that can also be assigned to toggle between the keymap profiles. It?s placed unergonomically below the D-pad,?and even a medium sized hand will overshoot the button. Speaking of size, the wrist-pad can be detached and adjusted in two positions that seem to be perfect for tiny Korean hands or large European ones. My average-sized Indian hand, however, had problems reaching the keys in either setting. The?humongous hump made it a bitch to reach the ZXC row at the bottom with the Korean setting, and my relatively tiny Indian fingers couldn?t reach the topmost row of face-keys at the European setting.
Razer?s ?Configurator? software does a good job at basics like keymapping, macros, profile assignment, and lighting control. You can set eight different keymaps, which can be selected using the ill-placed scroll wheel or sacrificing a button for the job.?These keymaps can be assigned to 20 different profiles each, which?are linked to the game executables. The Razer configurator can then call up an appropriate profile when you fire up one of the 20 games. Profiles can also be exported and imported,?allowing?gamers to?download one for?their favourite game right off the Internet.

When I put the Razer Nostromo through the paces in old school FPS classics like Far Cry, Serious Sam, Quake 3 Arena, and Unreal Tournament, the aforementioned gremlins made me want to revert to a regular keyboard. The less demanding and leisurely paced modern console ports like Crysis 2, however, were a bit more manageable. To be frank; I found the regular keyboard better at FPS games. On the other hand, RTS and RPG games seem perfect for the Nostromo. The intuitively arranged face-keys made an easy work of selecting squad formations, spell casting, and party management, as well as shortcuts for weapon sets, potions, and squad groupings. Advanced macro management is a boon for RTS and RPG titles as well. Anything else that doesn?t require a mouse is best handled with a regular keyboard or gamepad for obvious reasons.
The Xbox 360 controller rebadged as Onza shows that Razer can improve an already competent design when it wants to. However, Razer has shown abject laziness and insincerity by rebadging the Belkin N52 Speedpad as its own product, without putting in any R&D or engineering effort. This apathy is amply evident, as the rebadged Razer bears all the damning flaws of the original Belkin device. The Nostromo gaming keypad is a missed opportunity for Razer to showcase its design ingenuity. It could have been an awesome product, had Razer ironed out its design flaws. Before reaching a conclusion, we need to ask ourselves if it is fair to pay anywhere between a street price of Rs. 3,200 to Rs. 3,400 for a carbon copy of something that?s?still available at a slightly cheaper price? Wouldn?t that be akin to paying a premium for a Hyundai rebadged as a BMW?

The scroll-wheel is stuck uncomfortably under the hump of the wrist-pad, and there is absolutely no way to reach it in a dignified manner. The?face-key portion is?flanked by a pod bearing a circular button mapped to Alt key by default and an eight-way D-pad bearing a detachable knob that turns it into a pseudo-thumbstick. A useless one, I must add. It?s best to chuck the detachable knob away for good and use the D-pad to select weapons. That?s?because the Nostromo shockingly lacks the topmost row of numeric keys, which are imperative for quick access to one of Quake 3 Arena?s eight guns,?to cite an?example. The D-pad is still stiff, imprecise, and a pain to reach unless you have big ogre hands. The circular button is perfectly placed, but the tactile response is too spongy and lethargic to my liking.

Seeing The Perfection In Every Relationship

Since it is often very difficult to detect our own cracks or hidden agendas, our Higher Selves arrange for us to meet others who hold up mirrors so that we have a better chance of experiencing and understanding what isn't complete within us yet. Our friends and foes are all willing to play their respective roles for our benefit. We learn that we are all the things that we don't like in others, but we also discover that we are all the things we like in others. Both are challenging because they require acceptance on our part. How many times do we feel we are not worthy to receive, not beautiful enough to please, not intelligent enough to be of use, or not skilled or competent enough to make a difference? When we meet people who personify all those qualities that we deny we have, we may feel very attracted to them. We may love those qualities so much in the other person that we want to experience them all the time. We feel at a loss if they are not there, as if part of us was missing.

Many new relationships are formed on this basis. You may have had at least one such experience. Whatever you feel you do not have in yourself, you desire to get from another. However, as soon as your friend or partner stops holding up the mirror that reflects this expectation or need, the love bond seems to dwindle and the relationship begins to fade. If it is a romantic relationship, you may feel that the other person has changed so much you no longer feel the same excitement and joy you did before. You may decide that you can no longer stay with him/her.

On the other hand, a fading romance might reveal a true, lasting love that remained hidden until then but now has the chance to blossom and grow. Once expectations of how the other person is 'supposed' to be, begin dwindling away, our hidden agendas that had been hidden re-transmute into pearls of wisdom. They reveal our true identity. We begin to love the oneness we are and the oneness we see in the other; we begin to know from within that my oneness is also your oneness, and whatever you or I do or say does not disturb, stop or destroy this bond of pure love. There are no strings attached to this love, and no expectations that need fulfilling because we recognize that whatever the other represents to us is also in us. In fact, you are only able to resonate with these special qualities because you have them in yourself. By not fulfilling your expectations, your partner or friend helps you to become more complete. You no longer have this desperate need for someone else to 'make' you feel this way.

This kind of independence or self-sufficiency forms the basis of a relationship bonded by unconditional love. (Unconditional love is actually a redundant phrase. There is no conditional love because a condition arises out of fear, not love.) This is not to say that romantic relationships or faded relationships are not based on unconditional love; in reality they are, but this is not apparent.

Some relationships are only formed to clear some of the heavier, hidden agendas in our life and they may not last very long. Nevertheless, they occur because of a prior agreement the Higher Selves have made with each other to move forward in greater learning and integration. This agreement is made out of unconditional love for each other. One offers to be a mirror for the other, and vice versa. The mirror reflects all the 'good' and the 'bad' personality features one is able to project to that person. Each exchange, verbal, physical or otherwise is yet another opportunity for both sides to become a little more aware of withholding these good and bad things from ourselves. You dislike in your partner only what you do not like in yourself. This may be hard to grasp, but with a little self-honesty, we conclude that there is no other reason to be anti anything other than our own inability for accepting our undisclosed weaknesses.

Conversely, your partner may be fascinated or turned on by certain personality features of yours, because they represent something that they haven't yet been able to find within. You may think nothing of these qualities that they so much adore in you. The infatuation that occurs on both sides at the beginning of a romantic relationship must subside at some stage, if unconditional love is to take over.

Ditch the Bottle, Prevent Childhood Obesity

baby phat

In the Journal of Pediatrics, Brigid Huey begins by explaining this particular aspect of the childhood obesity puzzle:

Experts agree that obesity prevention should begin before children enter school. But due to a lack of conclusive data, health care providers often have trouble advising parents about which interventions are the most beneficial.

In other words, what works? It?s the same question Childhood Obesity News has been exploring in many forms. We have looked at school lunches and hyperpalatable foods. We have also discussed many aspects of the breastfeeding versus bottle-feeding controversy. Bottle-feeding as a separate subject? Not so much. So here goes.

Researchers have analyzed a pile of data derived from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study. The specific question they had in mind: if a baby is still on the bottle at 24 months, what are the chances that, by age 5?, we will be looking at an obese child? Short answer: don?t bottle-feed for too long. One member of the team, Rachel Gooze of Temple University?s Center for Obesity Research, believes that 1 year is about right. Others say a child should be weaned from the bottle by 14 months, maybe a year-and-a-half. But that bottle should definitely be phased out by age 2.

Skipping over to Temple University?s own website, we find reporter Renee Cree observing that prolonged bottle use can also lead to other bad outcomes, like cavities in the teeth. She includes a quotation from another team member, Dr. Robert Whitaker:

Children may over consume due to the comfort and security that a bottle provides, but at two years old, calories and nutrients can and should be coming from sources other than a bottle.

The third team member was Dr. Sarah Anderson, who hails from the College of Public Health at Ohio State University. Together they establish a definition of ?bottle user,? which means at 24 months, the child was mainly still drinking from a bottle, and maybe also being tucked in bed at night with a bottle full of calorie-laden liquid refreshment. Examination of 6750 records showed that 22% of the kids in the study were prolonged bottle users. Now, out of those prolonged bottle users, 23% of them were obese 3? years later.

For simplicity?s sake, let?s say there were 100 children, because it?s easier to do percentage math in your head if you start with 100. Then everything else falls into place. Still on the bottle at age 24 months: 22 kids. And of those 22, 23% grew obese, which is about a quarter of that population. 4 into 22 is 5?, so say 5.

Out of 100 babies, a certain number of them (22) are at risk for obesity if they approach their third year with a bottle in their mouth. Five of them will fulfill that prophecy by being obese at age 5?.

To save 5 out of 100 children is a worthy goal, especially when it doesn?t cost any taxpayers? money. All that is required is to convince parents to cease bottle-feeding well before the age of 2. Come to think of it, that probably will cost some money. But as a preventive measure against childhood obesity, this could be a solid lead, and it?s doable.

Sy Kraft of Medical News Today reminds us that there is such a thing a too much milk, which could displace solid food, causing the child to miss out on important nutrients such as iron. Speaking of doability, he endorses the idea of early separation from the bottle and offers practical encouragement:

By the time they?re a year old, kids have the motor skills to sit up, hold a cup, and drink from it, so they no longer need a bottle, at least not for nutrition. One-year-olds are much less stubborn, have a shorter memory, and are more interested in pleasing their parents than a child just six months older.

Bill Taylor of ParentCentral.ca quotes a couple of experts on the ?how? part of weaning. First, Dr. Catherine Birkin, who is a researcher in childhood obesity, counsels medical professionals:

So you change that trajectory. When they come to their doctor at about 9 months, you say, ?Here?s a cup; stop using a bottle.? Or if the mother is still breastfeeding, you move the child straight from there to using a cup. This is something we can do right on the spot and very easily.

Taylor also quotes Dr. Eddy Lau who is, when it comes to childhood obesity, an advocate of prevention rather than cure:

Adults can get through the night without eating and babies, from 6 or 7 months onward, can do without it, too? change the whole gestalt, break the bottle habit and get them to use a sippy cup. That automatically cuts their milk intake.
