Ways To Take Gymnastics Classes | recreation and sports blog ...

Thanks in large part to several meets broadcast on television, many boys and girls have developed an interest in gymnastics. Newport gymnastics schools as well as others around Delaware concentrate on training students to become artistic gymnasts. The artistic part of the sport involves crafting routines for apparatus such as the balance beam, vault, floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, and high bar. There are numerous opportunities for those that want to take Delaware gymnastics classes for competition or simply to have fun.

Enroll in recreational classes. Recreational classes provide students with basic instruction. Basic tumbling skills and minimal work on the different apparatus are introduced. Several venues offer recreational classes including churches, recreation centers, schools and churches. At the recreational level the emphasis is on having fun, though there may be opportunities to compete.

Accept an invitation to be a member of a competitive team. Top students in a recreational program are often invited to join a team at a private gym. Being a part of a competition team requires a substantial financial and time commitment. Students are trained on all apparatus and work with coaches to put together a routine for competition. Students can progress through competitive levels to compete at national and international events.

To become a competitive artistic gymnast, a student must be skilled on all four apparatus. Gyms recognized that some kids only wanted to learn to tumbling and began to develop tumbling-only classes. These classes start out teaching basic tumbling moves and eventually on how to complete difficult passes for tumbling competitions.

Adults have an opportunity to participate in gymnastics as well. Whether a seasoned gymnast or a novice, adults can find classes specifically tailored for them at many gyms. The only difference from programs for kids is that certain skills may not be taught. Adults can train to compete in several completions.

Rhythmic gymnasts do not complete the power, jumping and tumbling moves like artistic gymnasts do. Instead they perform dance-like routines to music using hand-held apparatus such as clubs, a ball, hoop and ribbon. Both individual and group competitions are held. Rhythmic classes are not as widespread as artistic classes so it may be challenging to find a course. Use several resources to find a suitable class.

Try cheerleading. Many Delaware cheerleading teams incorporate tumbling and stunts into their routines. With competitive fierce for a spot on high school cheerleading squads, many gyms have developed cheerleading programs. These programs teach the tumbling skills that most cheerleaders will needs. They may also work on stunting, dance and cheering. A few Delaware gymnastics schools sponsor competitive all-star cheerleader squads. Further, there are also gyms solely dedicated to cheerleading.

The Sleeping Giants Of African Mobile Payments

Screen Shot 2012-10-27 at 5.51.59 PMKenya?s M-PESA is the poster child for mobile money services in Africa, but it is also increasingly gaining attention further abroad. It is, however, only one of the mobile payment systems on the continent that have bypassed the typical financial rites of passage and are very quickly catapulting consumers into a truly cashless economy, as well as transforming lives in a very real sense.

50 years after Cuba Missile Crisis, US influence in hemisphere waning

Investment from emerging economies like China and Russia are diminishing Latin America's reliance on the United States, making it more difficult for Washington to isolate regimes like Cuba.?

By Sara Miller Llana,?Staff Writer / October 14, 2012

A soldier poses for a photograph on the outer casing of an old, empty Soviet missile on exhibit Saturday at the military complex Morro Cabana which is open to tourists in Havana, Cuba. On the 50th anniversary of the Cuban missile crisis, historians now say it was behind-the-scenes compromise rather than a high-stakes game of chicken that resolved the faceoff.

It was what many consider the most dangerous moment the world has ever faced: the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, which saw the United States square off over nuclear missiles stationed by the Soviet Union in Cuba.

This week marks the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the tense standoff. And while the politics of the Cold War have little relevance for US-Latin American relations today, in some ways the US finds itself in the very position that set the stage for conflict in the first place, says Philip Brenner, a historian of the missile crisis at American University. With US influence waning in the region, Latin America is forging ahead with its own agenda.

It was not only the containment of communism that drove US attempts to oust Fidel Castro from the helm of Cuba in the early 1960s says Mr. Brenner. The US was also concerned about Latin American countries emulating Cuba, particularly its geopolitical stance in the Cold War, and thus undermining American leadership in the western hemisphere. Some 50 years later, the US faces the same situation, just a more modern iteration.

?What the US feared the most in 1962 has come to pass,? says Brenner, who authored "Sad and Luminous Days: Cuba's Struggle with the Superpowers after the Missile Crisis."? ?We were concerned about our sphere of influence that we had taken for granted.? [Today] we cannot dominate this region anymore. They do not look to us for leadership. Countries look within the region, and to some extent to Cuba still.?

After the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the US turned its attention from Latin America as it focused on terrorism and threats from the Middle East. At the same time, over the past decade Latin American democracy has flourished and the global economy shifted, with Latin America no longer looking just north to the US for leadership and investment, but to India, China, and Russia. China surpassed the US as Brazil?s biggest trading partner in 2009.

Pro Baseball: National pain?Cardinals rally to win Game 5 - The ...

NATIONALS TAKE 6?0 LEAD EARLY,
BUT ST. LOUIS SCORES 4 IN NINTH

BY ZAC BOYER

WASHINGON?Ryan Zimmerman homered to right center field. So, too, did Bryce Harper. Michael Morse sent his to left.

In a span of three innings Friday night, the Washington Nationals made an emphatic statement to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Over the next six, the Cardinals made theirs.

St. Louis gradually chiseled away at a six-run lead, and the Cardinals advanced to play the San Francisco Giants in the National League Division Series beginning Sunday with a come-from-behind, 9?7 victory over Washington at Nationals Park.

While their pitching gave the Nationals the best record in the major leagues during the regular season, it was their undoing in their five games against the Cardinals.

Gio Gonzalez went only five innings, Edwin Jackson allowed a run in a seventh-inning relief appearance, Tyler Clippard surrendered a home run in the eighth and Drew Storen imploded in the ninth, surrendering a two-run lead with two outs.

So ended the Nationals? first chance to play for their first National League pennant, and the city?s first since 1933.

Gonzalez mostly erased the memory of an erratic Game 1 start by allowing five hits and three runs in five innings?far from a gem, but sparkling enough to pass.

In fact, though the Nationals built a six-run lead after three innings, the result was never clear.
Outscored 23?9 over the first four games, Washington used the momentum of a ninth-inning walk-off home run by Jayson Werth in Game 4 on Thursday for early ammunition.

Werth, the leadoff batter, doubled into the left field corner, Harper hit a triple off the left center field wall and Zimmerman homered, giving Washington a quick 3?0 lead before starter Adam Wainwright recorded an out.

Harper led the charge in the third. He homered to left center field to start the third inning before Zimmerman doubled, and after Adam LaRoche struck out, Michael Morse dropped a two-run home run into the visitors? bullpen in left center?a hit that knocked Wainwright from the game and gave Washington what, in a game of such magnitude, ordinarily would have been an insurmountable 6?0 lead.

But Gonzalez, who earned the Game 1 win despite feeling incredible pressure, began to struggle again. St. Louis picked up in a run in the fourth when Matt Holliday doubled in Carlos Beltran, and a lack of control at the start of the fifth led to Gonzalez loading the bases without any outs.

He allowed one run on a wild pitch and walked in another, and only a flyout to Werth in right field by Yadier Molina with the bases loaded saved the Cardinals from inflicting more damage.

Jackson, who manager Davey Johnson said before the game would only enter in extra innings, entered in the seventh. Battered for eight hits and four runs in a Game 3 loss, he allowed Jon Jay to score on a groundout, but struck out shortstop David Freese with the tying run on first.

Tyler Clippard, who struck out three of the four batters he faced in his one inning Thursday, surrendered a leadoff home run in the eighth to Daniel Descalso, who tucked the ball just over the wall inside the right field foul pole.

But Suzuki, acquired in August, drove in the seventh run in the eighth off Jason Motte, who led the National League with 42 saves. Adam LaRoche and Morse each singled to start the inning, Ian Desmond grounded into a force out that dropped Morse at second and Danny Espinosa popped out in foul territory before Suzuki scored LaRoche.

Storen, on for the save in the ninth, promptly allowed a leadoff double to Beltran. Holliday grounded out and Allen Craig struck out, but Storen couldn?t make a pitch, walking both Molina and Freese with full counts before Descalso drove in Beltran and Adron Chambers. Pete Kozma then plated Freese and Descalso.
Even as temperatures dipped into the low-50s on Friday, a standing room-only crowd of 45,966, the largest in stadium history, stayed on its feet.

It did so after the Nationals were retired in order in the ninth, saluting the Cardinals and Washington?s season.

Microsoft sets Windows 8 price, opens for pre-order

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp opened its Windows 8 operating system for pre-orders on Friday, setting the price for an upgrade to the full version of the software at $70 for a DVD pack.

Users can also wait for launch on October 26 to download the system onto their computers for $40, an offer price that will expire at the end of January. PCs running Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 will be able to upgrade to Windows 8.

Shoppers can reserve the software pack at Microsoft's own stores, Amazon.com, Best Buy, Staples and elsewhere. Microsoft has not yet announced the price of the full software to install from scratch, as opposed to the upgrade. The current price for a comparable version of Windows 7 is $200.

Any customer who buys, or already bought, a Windows 7 PC between June 2 and the end of January 2013 will be able to get an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $15, a move designed to prevent a drop-off in PC sales before the launch of Windows 8.

Microsoft also said PC makers such as Acer, Asustek, Dell, HP, Samsung and Sony were also now taking pre-orders for machines with Windows 8 pre-installed.

The world's largest software company did not mention its own Surface tablet PC, which is expected on the market at the same time as Windows 8. Microsoft has not revealed the price of the product it hopes will challenge Apple Inc's iPad.

(This story was corrected in the third graph to show Microsoft has not announced price for full software)

Internet Marketing ? Effects of Internet Marketing on the Industries ...

Internet marketing is indeed very influential to several types of industries. First of all, Internet marketing is the method of selling products with the use of the Internet. Currently, it has made a huge impact on industries that were once retail-oriented. Examples of these industries are film, music, flea markets, banking, pharmaceuticals and advertising as well. It went past radio marketing with regards to market share.

As for the music industry, Internet marketing has become a source for music files download. Ever heard of iTunes? In year 2008, iTunes Store became the leading music retailer in the whole United States.

Aside from these, banks are now performing several tasks through the net. Numerous people find online banking more appealing than actual visits to the bank because of its convenience. As a matter of fact, more than 150 million U.S. citizens go with online banking. Out of the 100% of people using Internet, 44% are performing banking tasks over the Internet. Also, online auctions are fast becoming popular. The items that were previously sold only at flea markets are now sold on online auctions, with eBay.com being the most popular.

It is also the basis for pricing of some specialized items. The impact of Internet marketing on the advertising industry has been deep as well. After a few years, online advertisement grew to be worth billions of dollars every year. In fact, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers, an incredible amount of $16.9 billion was spent for Internet marketing in the U.S. alone for year 2006. Presidential candidates also recognized this, which is why they used the Internet for campaigns.

Cocktail Hour: Apple Cider Sangria - Martha Stewart Weddings

Posted by Rosie Purdy

Photo: Courtesy of How Sweet It Is

It's no secret that we love using apples as dcor for fall weddings (centerpieces, escort cards, you name it!). So when I caught wind of this Apple Cider Sangria recipe from food blog How Sweet It Is, I was pretty darn excited. The ginger brandy in this drink gives it a warm, autumnal flavor, and the fresh fruit and cider will make you feel as though you just came from the orchard. It looks just as festive as it tastes, so whip up a big batch to serve at your bridal shower or wedding. For more delicious food and drink recipes, check out How Sweet It Is, and see signature cocktails from real weddings here. Cheers!

1 cup club soda
1/2 cup ginger brandy
3 honey crisp apples
3 pears

Directions: Chop apples and pears. Combine all of the ingredients in a large pitcher or bowl and stir thoroughly. Refrigerate for at least one hour and serve.

Bank of England 'should change course' to aid economic growth ...

The Bank of England needs to consider more unorthodox policies than quantitative easing, the chairman of the Financial Services Authority told a City audience last night.

In a speech regarded as a job application for the Bank governorship, Lord Turner of Ecchinswell admitted that he was wrong to have supported membership of the euro at one time, heaped praise on parts of the City and spelt out how he could not be blamed for failings in bank supervision in the run-up to the crisis.

PCs head for first sales drop since 2001: report

1 hr.

A new report predicts worldwide sales of personal computers are bound for their first annual decline in 11 years.

The forecast issued Wednesday by the research firm IHS iSuppli projects that nearly 349 million PCs will be shipped this year. That would be a 1 percent decrease from nearly 353 million PC shipments last year.

Although small, the anticipated decline would be the first time that annual PC sales haven't grown since 2001.

PC makers began the year with hope that a new wave of lightweight laptops called ultrabooks would provide a sales lift. But the ultrabooks haven't been compelling enough to overcome the growing popularity of smartphones and tablet computers. Those mobile devices are reducing the need for consumers and businesses to buy new PCs or replace older ones.

As the year winds down, the PC industry is now counting on an upcoming makeover of the Windows operating system to revive interest in desktop and laptop machines.

Windows 8 has been redesigned by Microsoft so it can power hybrid PCs that can be controlled by touching a display screen or relying on a keyboard and computer mouse. The revamped operating system also works on tablet computers, including one that is being made by Microsoft. If the tablets running on Windows catch on, they threaten to siphon even more sales from PCs.

Machines running on Windows 8 are scheduled to go on sale Oct. 26 from Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard, Samsung, Dell and others.?

Romney Says Nobody Dies for Lack of Health Insurance

October 11, 2012

Mitt Romney, who has pledged to repeal Obamacare, told the Columbus Dispatch that people without health insurance don't have to worry about dying as a result.

Said Romney: "We don't have people that become ill, who die in their apartment because they don't have insurance."

However, Reuters reported on research released earlier this year that said more than 26,000 working-age adults die prematurely in the United States each year because they lack health insurance.

Greek unemployment rises above 25 percent

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Unemployment in Greece hit a record high of 25.1 percent in July as the country's financial crisis continues to exact its heavy toll, official figures showed Thursday.

All indications are that unemployment in Greece will continue to rise. The economy has shrunk by around a fifth since the recession started in 2008 and youth unemployment has pushed far above 50 percent. The economy is expected to enter a sixth year of recession next year.

"This is a very dramatic result of the recession," said Angelos Tsakanikas, head of research at Greece's IOBE economic research foundation.

The state statistics agency said Greece's unemployment rate rose from 24.8 percent in June. According to European statisticians, that would be the same rate as Spain's in August.

The two countries have the highest unemployment rates among the 17 that use the euro. In August, eurozone unemployment stood at an average 11.4 percent, itself the highest level since the single currency was launched in 1999.

Greece's statistical authority said 1.26 million Greeks were out of work in July, with more than 1,000 jobs lost every day over the past year. In the worst-affected 15-24 age group, unemployment was 54.2 percent. In July 2008, a year before Greece's acute financial crisis broke, there were only about 364,000 registered unemployed.

The country's main GSEE labor union said real unemployment is above 30 percent and growing, which it blamed on "violent" government cutbacks.

After losing access to international money markets and nearly defaulting on its mountain of debt, Greece has survived on international bailouts since May 2010.

However, solvency comes at a harsh price: To secure and continue receiving the loans, Athens imposed tough austerity measures, slashing incomes and repeatedly increasing taxes, in an attempt to get its public finances in order.

The conservative-led government is currently in negotiations with the country's creditors over another raft of austerity measures, worth ?13.5 billion ($17.4 billion) over the next two years, so it can get the next batch of bailout funds. Greece has to satisfy certain periodic conditions in order to qualify for the handouts.

Without the money, Greece won't be able to pay all its financial obligations and may end up defaulting on its debts and leaving the euro.

The cutbacks have triggered deep resentment among a population reeling under nearly three years of austerity. GSEE and other main unions have called a new general strike and demonstration next week.

"During a time when unemployment is strangling Greek society and the recession is at 7 percent, it is at least provocative that (bailout creditors are) focusing on further bleeding workers and pensioners," GSEE said in a statement.

Finance Minister Yiannis Stournaras was holding talks Thursday evening with representatives of the European Union, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank ? the so-called troika. The government still hopes to have struck a deal before next week's EU summit in Brussels, officials say.

The troika has to sign off the package for the release of the funds.

After the late-evening talks, a senior government official said it remained unclear whether agreement on the austerity package could be reached before the Oct. 18-19 meeting in Brussels of European heads of government.

The official said another sticking point was how to cover the cost of a Greek request to extend its fiscal adjustment program by two years to the end of 2016, with the price tag estimated at ?12 billion ($15.5 billion).

The official asked not to be named because the negotiations are ongoing.

Some evidence emerged Thursday that the government's strategy is working on one front, at least. Finance Ministry figures showed that the deficit-busting effort is on track despite lower-than-anticipated revenues.

The ministry said the January-September deficit was ?12.64 billion, lower than the ?13.5 billion target. Although revenues were ?1.3 billion off target, spending was ?2.2 billion less than budgeted.

All three parties in Greece's governing coalition back the two-year extension, and IMF chief Christine Lagarde on Thursday said she also supports the idea.

"I said repeatedly that an additional two years was necessary for the country to actually face the Fiscal Consolidation Program that is considered," Lagarde told reporters as the IMF and World Bank held annual meetings in Tokyo.

But German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who in a visit to Athens on Tuesday praised Greek progress with reforms but stressed that much remains to be done, said the troika must deliver its report before any decision is made.

"I do not want to comment on every single statement of which we see many during a single day," she said. "This is the base. I now wait for the troika report, then we will forge our position," she said.

Tamara 'Sunny' Sytch, former wrestling star from Staten Island, is ...

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A former World Wrestling Entertainment star from Staten Island faces domestic violence-related charges following her fifth arrest in the last month involving her ex-boyfriend in Branford, Conn.

Tamara Sytch of Brookfield Avenue, Great Kills, built a reputation as "Sunny," the biggest sex symbol in the World Wrestling Federation, as the WWE was known in the 1990s. While most of her career involved managing wrestlers, she made a number of memorable appearances inside the ring over the years and continues to draw crowds at fan festivals.

On Tuesday, she was arrested for the fifth time in the past month and the second time in two days. She was held on $100,000 cash bond Tuesday, NBC News reports. According to those reports, Ms. Sytch, 39, was arrested Monday at the home she used to share in Connecticut, where she was found intoxicated and sleeping at 7 p.m. Her presence at the home was in violation of orders of protection related to domestic violence charges. The following day, she was spotted at the residence and arrested again.

NBC News, citing court documents, said the ex-boyfriend reported Ms. Sytch had been yelling in the bathroom, and then kicked down the door during the week's first incident on Monday. "He told police they had been dating for several months and she had lived with him for two months, but she has a problem with alcohol and had been in rehabilitation for a month," according to the report.

After her release, and despite the order of protection, she returned to his house Tuesday and entered through an unlocked door after climbing onto the balcony, according to police. As she was again arrested, she told police, according to NBC, that she believed she was not violating the order of protection because the ex-boyfriend was not home at the time, and she was only there to pick up clothes and her cellphone.

Last month, Ms. Sytch was arrested three times on charges connected to the same case. She faces multiple felony charges, according to Connecticut state court records.

Following those arrests, World Wrestling Entertainment pledged to assist her: "As part of WWE's Former Talent Rehabilitation Program, we sent Ms. Sytch to rehabilitation three times, with all costs covered by WWE," the organization said in a prepared statement. "Unfortunately, Ms. Sytch continues to make poor personal choices. WWE will continue to provide assistance should she want to take advantage of it."

Over the years, Ms. Sytch has embraced the title of wrestling diva. WWE has quoted her as saying: "The girls who came before me were so one dimensional and then I came along and anything they threw at me I could do. I could get in the ring and have a match, I managed at ringside, I co-hosted TV shows, I did broadcasting, I did the modeling. I was the first one."

Her WWE Superstars Web page credits her with managing three teams to the World Tag Team championships and being AOL's most downloaded woman of 1996. Over the years, she has also wrestled for Extreme Championship Wrestling and Xtreme Pro Wrestling.

Rev Clinton Chisholm accused of pushing ?bad science? in regards ...

as posted on Anti Gay Fact Check?a new gay blogger on the scene and I am happy that the tool was rejected by some in LGBT advocacy has now become the very way to speak out on issues, the young blogger has been doing his homework thus leaving me time to see other points of view and focus on other areas.

AGFC wrote:

Rev. Dr. Clinton Chisholm who is a lecturer at the Jamaica Theological Seminary quotes some studies to denounce the ?ex-gay? therapy ban in California for minors in an effort to sound smart.

As usual, we at AGFC are ahead of the game and we know when the anti-gay movement/?ex-gay? mythologists not only tell lies but have no clue what they themselves are even talking about.

?Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity? ? Martin Luther King, Jr.

?

We debunked his article entitled ?That Puzzling California Law? below which you can read here:?http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20121009/cleisure/cleisure3.html

1)

The ostensibly progressive and rights-protecting California law banning all reparative (?conversion?) therapy for minors is very puzzling and raises some very awkward questions.

What is it about homosexual orientation or behaviour (if unwanted) that makes it so uniquely resistant to psychotherapeutic behaviour-modification interventions? I say uniquely resistant because such clinical interventions are utilised for a whole range of unwanted behaviours, including alcoholism, sexual/gender identity issues, anxiety disorders (phobias), unlawful sexual urges, etc.

What then is the real motivator behind the rights veneer of the California law?

We should also factor in religious interventions. Bottom line: Is there any unwanted behaviour for which clinical behaviour-modification or spiritual intervention is ruled out, a?priori, and why?

Now first of all Mr. Chisholm needs to understand three things. He needs to?understand?that homosexuality is not a behaviour but a sexual?attraction?to?the?same sex. He also needs to understand that reparative/conversion therapy is not modifying same-sex behaviour but same-sex?attractions. He also needs to understand that homosexuality is not listed as a mental disorder by any mental health organisation. Can homosexuality be compared to alcoholism, phobias and anxiety disorders which are all classified as?psycho-pathologies? What is so unique about homosexual orientation that Rev. Chisholm would want to force a child to ?change it?? Do you change a child?s sexual orientation to please religiously motivated political groups or do you help them to overcome the social pressures which cause them to not be pleased with their sexual orientation?

Why does Mr. Chisholm?believe?that the Californian law is giving anyone rights? In fact, the law is there to protect the well being of children. Now, the American Psychological Association(APA) in 2009?produced?a 130 page report on the efficacy of sexual orientation change efforts(SOCE) after reviewing 83 studies done from from 1960-2007. In it they said:

?We found that there was some evidence to indicate that individuals experienced harm from SOCE. Early studies documented iatrogenic effects of aversive forms of SOCE. These negative side effects included loss of sexual feeling, depression, suicidality, and anxiety. High drop rates characterized early aversive treatment studies and may be an indicator that research participants experienced these treatments as harmful?.

See here:?http://www.apa.org/pi/lgbt/resources/therapeutic-response.pdf

Another study done by?Schroeder & Shidlo in 2001 on 202 so called ?ex-gays? found that many of them experienced harm from the ?therapy?. The study?s summary said:

?We found evidence that many consumers of failed sexual orientation?therapies experienced them as harmful. Areas of perceived?psychological harm included depression, suicidality, and?self-esteem. In the case of aversive conditioning and covert sensitization,?harm included intrusive flashback-like negative imagery?that was associated with serious long-term sexual dysfunction.?Areas of perceived social harm included impairment in intimate?and nonintimate relationships. Some religious participants also?reported experiencing spiritual harm as a result of religious?therapy.?

See study here:?Schroeder & Shidlo?s study

Is this not reason to protect children from so-called therapies which are harmful? Read our post about an experience of a child who went through this ?therapy?(http://antigayfactcheck.org/2012/07/15/forced-ex-gay-therapy-led-child-to-his-death/). The results were disastrous.

Is ?ex-gay? the same as heterosexual?

2)

What then should one make of the implications of two articles in the American Journal of Psychiatry, namely, ?The Masters and Johnson Treatment Program for Dissatisfied Homosexual Men?, American Journal of Psychiatry, 141 (1984), 173-81 and E. Mansell Pattison and Myrna Loy Pattison, ?Ex-Gays: Religiously Mediated Change in Homosexuals?, American Journal of Psychiatry, 137 (1980), 12?

The Masters & Johnson treatment programme reports conversion success rate at 65 per cent after a five-year follow-up.

As usual the religious right loves to quote studies that other politically motivated ?family? groups give to them but never bother reading or researching on these studies themselves.

The study done by Masters and Johnson entitled ?The Masters and Johnson Treatment Program for Dissatisfied Homosexual Men? proves this well as Mr. Chisholm doesn?t even realise that one of the authors, Virginia Johnson, admitted in 2009 that the results were fabricated. Fabricated results masquerading as truth? Is this some deception campaign of the anti-gay movement? The famous science magazine, Scientific American, did a report on this. It said:

?Prior to the book?s publication, doubts arose about the validity of their case studies.?Most staffers never met any of the conversion cases during the study period of 1968 through 1977, according to research I?ve done for my new book Masters of Sex . Clinic staffer Lynn Strenkofsky, who organized patient schedules during this period, says she never dealt with any conversion cases.?Marshall and Peggy Shearer, perhaps the clinic?s most experienced therapy team in the early 1970s, says they never treated homosexuals and heard virtually nothing about conversion therapy.

Eventually Kolodny approached Virginia Johnson privately to express his alarm. She, too, held similar suspicions about Masters? conversion theory, though publicly she supported him.?The prospect of public embarrassment, of being exposed as a fraud, greatly upset Johnson, a self-educated therapist who didn?t have a college degree and depended largely on her husband?s medical expertise.

With Johnson?s approval, Kolodny spoke to their publisher about a delay, but it came too late in the process.??That was a bad book,? Johnson recalled decades later. Johnson said she favored a rewriting and revision of the whole book ?to fit within the existing [medical] literature,? and feared that Bill simply didn?t know what he was talking about. At worst, she said, ?Bill was being creative in those days? in the compiling of the ?gay conversion? case studies.?

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=homosexuality-cure-masters-johnson

This is the third time we have heard about this Masters and Johnson study. The more they quote it is the easier our job gets.

As for the study ?Ex-Gays: Religiously Mediated Change in Homosexuals?, well we have a?real?interesting story to tell about this one. In 1978, two outside psychiatrists, were allowed to interview members of Exodus International, the worlds largest ?ex-gay? organisation which recently distanced itself from reparative therapy. Of the ministry?s 300 members at the time, 30 were selected by the ministry staff as having changed from exclusively homosexual to exclusively heterosexual in orientation. The researchers interviewed the 30 and determined that only 11 had really been largely ?cured? of their homosexual orientation because they had remained celibate. However, 8 of the 11 continued to have a homosexual or bisexual orientation because they still reported homosexual dreams, fantasies and/or impulses. Therefore only 3 out of 300 members who underwent this ?therapy? reported changing to heterosexual. This would mean that the therapy has a 1% success rate if we were to?believe?the 3 men. No follow-up study was done and the subjects were taken from a political organisation which probably skewed the results. The study has obvious methodological flaws.

The Pattison study included a table describing their interview findings with the 11 subjects (from page 1555, see below). Bussee was subject number two and Cooper was number one.

However something happened in 1979 to two of the participants. Michael Bussee and Gary Cooper left the organisation, divorced their wives and ended up marrying each other. These two leaving as failures prove that the study was very flawed. In fact, Michael Bussee today criticised the study and even the organisation he helped to found, Exodus International.

http://www.religiondispatches.org/archive/sexandgender/5374/participant_discredits_the_original_ex-gay_study/

Do we want to put children through a therapy known to cause harm which according to a flawed study only resulted in 1% success?

3)

In the cutting-edge book?Ex-Gays? A Longitudinal Study of Religiously Mediated Change in Sexual Orientation?by Stanton L. Jones & Mark A. Yarhouse, Downers Grove, IL: IVP Academic, 2007, the authors found, contrary to the belief of certain clinicians, that change is possible.

Though operating with an upfront Christian commitment, Jones and Yarhouse conceded that they did not find that change is possible for everyone. They write: ?The fact that some human beings can break the four-minute-mile barrier establishes that running a four-minute mile is not impossible, but that same fact does not establish that anyone (every human being) can break the four-minute-mile barrier.?

So, then, are the California legislators unaware of the pro-change pieces of literature mentioned above and published in their own country? Behold, I show you a mystery, or perhaps mischief!

The study by Jones and Yarhouse was rejected by the American Psychological Association for methodological flaws. The authors themselves even ?said on their website?(http://www.exgaystudy.org/ex-gays/responses-to-criticism)?in regards to what ?conversion? means that: ?Most of the individuals who reported that they were heterosexual at Time 3?did not report themselves to be without experience of homosexual arousal, and did not report heterosexual orientation to be unequivocal and uncomplicated.? In other words, the people who claimed they ?changed? still experienced homosexual attractions and were thus bisexual. The study did not indicate as to whether or not they were bisexual before the study however. This study was clearly not a study to prove that homosexuals can ?change? into heterosexuals but that some subjects experienced attractions to the opposite sex after ?therapy?. Without knowing whether or not they were also attracted to the opposite sex before the study is a methodological flaw. The authors single sentence summary says: ?In short,?the results do not prove that categorical change in sexual orientation is possible for everyone or anyone, but rather that meaningful shifts along a continuum that constitute real changes appear possible for some.?

From: Rhythms of the Solomons ? A Stunning Harmony Between Island People and Marine Life by Carin Bondar at PsiVid.

Source: Bruce Carlson

This week?s video takes us on a tropical adventure with colorful, astonishing coral reef invertebrates and the sounds of the native peoples of the Solomon Islands. Rhythms of the Solomons, created by Bruce Carlson, paints a peaceful picture of the coexistence of humans with nature. It?s uplifting, and the cinematography is fantastic. From the myriad of crustaceans, molluscs, cnidarians and other marine organisms in this area, one is reminded that some coral reef environments remain in-tact and healthy.
